Abstract

The Internet is in the grip of malicious forces whose power has grown beyond our wildest imagination in recent months. We trace the history of botnets and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, explore the rise of the Mirai botnet, look at extortion-for-hire, and discuss what you can do to protect yourself and your online services as the Internet grows darker by the minute.
